Ecuador, a country with substantial petroleum resources and rich agricultural areas. When Texaco pulled out of Ecuador, it left behind catastrophic pollution that has been called "the Environmental Crime of the Century." Ecuador's northeastern provinces are the site of an ongoing public health and environmental disaster. It has been said that four million gallons a day of toxic wastewater have been dumped over a 20-year period into unlined waste pits and streams of Ecuador. The oil company left 600 open waste pits and 339 wells behind when it stopped its operations. Children play on the pipe line that brings oil from the center of the country to the coast. .Photos by Justin Ide/www.justinide.com.
